How to Draw People

How many times have you ever looked at professional illustrator or artist and smiled after marveling at their work and said, "Wow, I so wish I could draw and paint like that!"
In truth, it's actually easier than you may think.. It does come from practice and commitment. Even the greatest portrait painters in history still needed training by other masters.
Know this. There was a time when you learned how to walk and here you are, now walking. Most everyone does. You saw that everyone else around you was walking and you just knew you could do it too. So why is drawing any different?
Now you only see "some" people who are artists and for some reason that same belief is in place--not everyone can draw, so I can't either. I'm here to tell you that drawing is just like walking. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
It is not impossible to learn how to draw people. I can show you but it would serioiusly take more than 1 short article herein.
But there are still some golden nuggets here to help you.
The Basics of How to Draw People.
So, if you want to learn how to draw people, you'll have to understand a few basics.
First, don't try to draw a head, then a torso, then limbs, then hands. No, No...and NO!
Drawing the human form is done from what we call "large to small". You do everything at once (weird concept, I know, but learning how to do it will rapidly improve your drawing skills).
Here's how that works.
Say you're looking at a model in a pose. Where do you begin? Well, you start by lightly sketching a very large oblong irregular circle around her, moving your flattened pencil in soft rolling flows around her external points--head to hands, hands to feet. to hands, to head.
Then, still moving quickly and still lightly, and without lifting your pencil, make the next flow circle from waist to hands to head. That's right, don't lift your pencil in this process. And move your eyes back and forth constantly from her pose to your drawing
Then, still without lifting your pencil, make the next flow from waist to feet. And so on and so forth.
We're woking on proportion ratios, but we are NOT drawing a person at this point--only ratios of abstract proportions.
Only after you get these ratios clearly related on paper can you move to more refined pieces like head ratios, arms, legs, torso.
By the way, ALWAYS leave your lines soft until you are absolutely certain that the ratios are correct. Don't harden your pencil, just use your kneaded eraser to remove the lines that you don't want.
That's the big first secret to learn how to draw people (and, well, anything)
How to draw a face, how to draw hands, how to draw eyes--it's all the same basic technique as how to draw a person. And when you know how to draw a face you are on your way to learning how to become a portrait artist and EVERYBODY will want to pay you to draw them. That's how Claude Monet got started as a young boy; by drawing cartoon faces of rich French noblemen and gentlemen around Paris for small change.
Now you too can enjoy the same education that schools charge thousands of dollars for at price of a dinner out.
