How to Draw Animals

The first thing you'll notice about drawing animals is that they simply don't stay still...unless maybe you catch them asleep.
The first step is to take a picture of them. In fact, take your camera to the zoo and take lot's of pictures. When you get back home, you're likely to find some fun ideas inside your set of pictures. And remember, you don't need to stick to the entire picture or even stick to the same elements of the same picture. YOU'RE THE ARTIST and you can draw ANYTHING you want including collages. (A collage is a picture composed of elements of other pictures).
And you are certainly not limited to what animal you can draw. (By the way, after you complete my course you'll know:
- how to draw dog
- how to draw cat
- how to draw wolf
- how to draw tiger
- how to draw horses
But there are simple steps to drawing all of these and any other you can think of.
The Basics of How to Draw Animals.
So, if you want to learn how to draw animals, you'll have to understand a few basics.
First, don't try to draw a head, then the body, then legs, it just won't work. You'll miss your proportions and things just won't look right.
And personally, I'm opposed to those techniques you'll find on the internet that say here, draw this rectangle, then this circle, add eyes and ears and a tail and voila, you'll have an animal. These techniques might be good to teach kids by, but if you want to be an artist you'll have to learn other methods.
Drawing animals, like drawing people is done from what we call the One Big Shape. You use a pencil and lightly sketch the overall.
Here's how that works.
Look at the picture of your animal. Where do you begin? Well, you start by lightly sketching a very large oblong irregular circle outlining the largest single form, moving your flattened pencil in soft rolling flows around the animals's external points--head to back to tail to paws and back to head.
Then, still moving quickly and still lightly, and without lifting your pencil, make the next flow circle from shoulders to paws to head. That's right, don't lift your pencil in this process. And move your eyes constantly back and forth from the picture to your drawing.
We're woking on proportion ratios, but we are NOT drawing an animal at this point--only ratios of abstract proportions. Try NOT to see the animal. After you think you've got it, turn both your picture and drawing around and see what you've got. You'll be surprised at what you'll see.
Only after you get these ratios clearly related on paper can you move to more refined pieces like head ratios, legs, body, even parts of a background.
By the way, ALWAYS leave your lines soft until you are absolutely certain that the ratios are correct. Don't harden your pencil, just use your kneaded eraser to remove the lines that you don't want.
That's the big first secret to learn how to draw animals (and, well, anything).
Here is a sample of one of our student's work.
Once you understand the step-by-step methods of how to draw anything, then it's easy to do just that--
How to draw a dog, how to draw a cat, how to draw a horse--it's all the same basic technique as how to draw animals and how to draw a person.
